Manuscript Evaluations

A manuscript evaluation will give you a birds-eye diagnostic look at aspects such as prose style, character and plot development, point of view, pacing, organization, etc. It's perfect for deciphering why your book might not appeal to an agent, or what might be poking holes in the reader experience. You'll receive a 5-10 page report.

Copy Editing

Copy editing looks for technical problems, but also corrects mistakes or oddities in syntax, flow, continuity, story logic, etc. It's the tool that chisels your manuscript into its most polished form for queries and publication.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is the crucible that transforms a great idea into an excellent product.  This involves a more in-depth conversation between you and your editor, who will help to define the focus of your book, challenge you to justify development choices, cut excess, and ensure the structural bones of your product are functional.  You will receive a full developmental edit of your manuscript/outline/etc., as well as a follow-up session after changes have been made.

 About

At Hickory, we value the conversation above the rule book, and the result above the conversation.  With this hierarchy as our guiding principle, authors are guaranteed a professional, respectful handling of their work, void of counterfeit flattery and autocratic attitude.  We pride ourselves on honesty and a collaborative effort to mold a project into its ideal form.  Publication does not happen without book editors, but book editors wouldn't exist without mistakes.

Hickory was founded by Kaylynn Schuetzner, a woman with a knack for communication and an untamed passion for sharing great books with others.  Her advanced degrees in linguistics and creative writing have allowed her to solder together the science of linguistic systems and a honed understanding of creative license.  These skills, coupled with her experience in acquisitions and commitment to integrity, have sculpted Kaylynn's ethos and editing methods.

Without editing, you accept an inferior form of your work.
